Poll Results: Most NZers Think Expelled MPs Should Resign

70% of New Zealanders believe that list MPs who are expelled from their parties should have to resign from parliament, according to a UMR Research poll released today. 16% think that they should not have to leave parliament, while 14% are undecided.

• Support for compulsory resignation increases with age, with 81% of over 60 year olds believing that expelled list MPs should have to resign, compared with 51% of under 30 year olds.
• 78% of those who have closely followed Brendan Horan’s expulsion from the New Zealand First caucus think that expelled list MPs should have to resign.

UMR’s fortnightly Omnibus Survey specified list MPs as opposed to electorate MPs, and also MPs who are expelled as opposed to those who leave their party’s caucus of their own accord.

The UMR Research Nationwide Omnibus Survey was conducted 6-10 December. It has a nationally representative sample of 750 New Zealanders 18 years and over. The margin of error for a 50% figure at the ‘95% confidence level’ is +/- 3.6%.
