UNICEF NZ (UN Children’s Fund) has launched an emergency appeal in response to Cyclone Evan, and the agency is standing by ready to respond to government requests for assistance.

UNICEF’s Pacific office in Suva is continuing to monitor the situation closely in both Fiji and Samoa, and is ready to mobilise emergency supplies, Executive Director Dennis McKinlay said today.

“In Fiji, we have been asked to provide supplies of oral rehydration salts which are used to treat dehydration caused by diarrhea. In Samoa, where a State of Emergency has been declared, we are awaiting advice from the Government as to how best to assist.”

According to initial reports, the cyclone has caused considerable damage to hundreds of homes and schools on the island of Upolu in Samoa. At least four people have been killed and thousands left homeless. In Fiji, where the government has requested international assistance, there are reports of extensive damage to the northern and western areas of the country. More than 8,400 people are being housed in evacuation centres.

“As experience has shown, children are the most vulnerable in any emergency. UNICEF is ready to provide relief and support to ensure their health and protection,” Dennis McKinlay said.

Donations to the Pacific Cyclone Emergency Appeal can be made online at www.unicef.org.nz/pacific
