Funding opportunities available

The Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust (CPTHT) and the Pacific Development and Conservation Trust (PADEVCON) are currently receiving applications for funding. Applications for both Trusts must be submitted by 5pm 2 April 2013.

The CPTHT funds projects that improve understanding of the Chinese community in New Zealand and strengthen the unique identity of Chinese New Zealanders. Applicants do not have to be Chinese or descendants of early settlers.

The CPTHT was established in 2004 in recognition of the hardship caused by the poll tax and other discriminatory legislation, while the PADEVCON Trust was established in 1989 with money paid by the French government in recognition of events surrounding the destruction of the Rainbow Warrior.

CPTHT Trust chair Tony Thackery said the Trust has already funded Chinese histories, a project to restore Chinese gravestones and several performing arts projects.

“Last year the Trust granted $149,586 to 27 projects, including a grant to promote cultural awareness and to celebrate the 2013 Chinese New Year and one to research the history of a Chinese cemetery and other aspects of Chinese culture,” he said.

PADEVCON funds projects that promote a peaceful, sustainable Pacific region where all cultures flourish and the natural environment is respected.

The PADEVCON Trust distributes approximately $250,000 to a range of development and conservation projects such as youth workshops in bee-keeping, eco-tourism initiatives, forest restoration and community conservation projects.

Trust chair Peter Kiely said the Trust particularly welcomes applications from communities, organisations, and individuals.

John Grant, from the Society for Community Development Support Inc said their grant to supply eco-friendly, reliable, microhydro electricity to a remote village in Malaita, Solomon Islands had provided employment opportunities, improved relationships with nearby villages and will shortly support improved health care in highland villages by allowing chilled storage of vaccines and medications.”
