How do rising house prices and rents affect people? And what can we do about it?

Home ownership rates are falling and many New Zealanders struggle to pay high rental costs. Housing affordability has risen to the top of the political agenda, particularly its impact on child poverty. Charles looks at the human faces of housing unaffordability in New Zealand and assesses policy prescriptions to alleviate the issues.)

Australians for Affordable Housing is a national campaign for access to safe, secure and affordable housing. It is driven by coalition of more than 60 national housing, welfare and community sector organisations concerned with the challenges faced by renters and first-home buyers. The Australian experience suggests ways to build public support for affordable housing policies in New Zealand.
