Double Standard of Labour and Greens Schizophrenic
“For Labour and the Greens to
expect the asset sales referendum to influence government
when they blatantly rejected the anti-smacking referendum is
a double standard, and further undermines their
credibility,” says Colin Craig.
“The asset sales referenda achieved a 44% turnout, but 56% turned out for the anti-smacking referendum.”
“Over 67% voted no to asset sales, but over 87% voted no to the anti-smacking law.”
“The asset sales referendum was a political initiative; the anti-smacking referendum was a citizen’s initiative.”
“If you’re going to argue the asset sales referendum should mean something, you have to argue the anti-smacking one does too, says Mr Craig.”
“The Conservative Party’s consistent approach that all referenda achieving a substantial majority should be binding on government makes sense, but the schizophrenic nature of the Labour and Greens approach, does not.”
