We should be proud of our flag

Most people worldwide are proud of their national flag. That pride has nothing to do with the design or uniqueness of the flag. Pride comes from its being the symbol that represents the nation. The New Zealand flag has represented us for 145 years this coming October. Only 14 other national flags are that old. A black flag - the symbol of anarchy and rugby - can never be a national flag.

The Prime Minister's dismissive comment that the flag "symbolises a colonial and post-colonial era whose time has passed" says more about John Key's lack of patriotism than anything else. Our flag has stood the test of time. It will outlast political meddling.
