Code of Welfare protects rodeo animals

Code of Welfare protects rodeo animals

Everyone responsible for organising the event, handling animals or competing at the National Finals Rodeo at Outram this weekend must adhere to the Code of Welfare for rodeos, says the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC).

NAWAC says the code sets out minimum standards and best practice guidelines for all rodeo animals that provide for the animals’ overall physical health and behavioural needs.

“As rodeos are a form of entertainment there is an ethical obligation on society to ensure that the welfare of these animals is paramount and the risk of injury is minimised,” said John Hellström, the Chair of NAWAC.

“The code requires that animals must be handled at all times in such a way as to minimise the risk of pain, injury or distress. If the Code of Welfare for rodeos is observed it provides safeguards to protect the welfare of rodeo animals.”

The code also applies to animals used in training and rodeo schools.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has confirmed it will have an animal welfare inspector at the rodeo. It is a requirement of the Code that a veterinarian is in attendance throughout the rodeo.

NAWAC is an independent committee formed to give advice about animal welfare to the Minister for Primary Industries.

To report cases of mistreatment of animals or cruelty please contact the Ministry for Primary Industries on 0800 00 83 33.
