Women's Peace Group support Nobel prize

Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), New Zealand’s oldest women’s peace group, congratulates the ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons), the international NGO working to ban nuclear weapons which has was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on the weekend.

“The money being spent on nuclear weapons could be better spent in a world where there are millions of refugees on the move across continents looking for a secure future, and climate change that is already bringing costly weather events, destroying the homes of millions of people” says WILPF President Megan Hutching.

“This year New Zealand is celebrating the 30th anniversary of legislation that declared our country nuclear weapons free. It seems our message that nuclear weapons are unacceptable is also being vindicated in this award.”

WiLPF, which has offices in New York and Geneva, is one of the founding members of New Zealand’s ICAN network.
