NZRB Welcomes Government Support for New Zealand Racing

NZRB Welcomes Government Support for New Zealand Racing

The New Zealand Racing Board (NZRB) welcomes an announcement by the Racing Minister at the Karaka Yearling Sales regarding initiatives supporting the New Zealand racing industry.

“The Minister’s announcement is a clear demonstration of the Government’s commitment to our industry, and a recognition of the continued relevance and contribution of racing to New Zealand economy and community,” says NZRB CEO, John Allen.

"The Minister has indicated his desire to make progress on a range of issues as quickly as possible, and NZRB has reiterated our support to the Minister in carrying out his priorities.

“The issue of aging track infrastructure and its impact on the racing calendar has been increasingly apparent, with 36 meetings impacted by abandonments in 2016/17 costing the industry $2.3 million in lost profit, and a number of abandonments already this season causing further disruption.

“The Minister’s support for an all-weather track is an important step towards modernising our infrastructure and ensuring it is fit-for-purpose for racing in the twenty-first century,” says Mr Allen.

"It is also important to note that improved racing infrastructure benefits more than just the racing industry. These are community assets that support a broad range of local businesses and social activities. It's critical that the quality of our infrastructure matches the international pedigree of our horses.

"We look forward to a busy period of engagement with the Minister and making progress on a range of issues affecting the industry," says Mr Allen.
