Wgtn Group Praised for Depoliticising Environment

Conservation Group Praised for 'Depoliticising the Environment'

The purchase of a tract of Brooklyn native forest by Wellington conservation groups was praised by Libertarianz Environment Deregulation Spokesman Peter Cresswell as a great example of how to "depoliticise the environment".

"Buying this native bush - gaining the protection for the land of such
private property rights as still exist in New Zealand - offers much surer
environmental protection for the land than if it had remained a prisoner of
the political process," says Cresswell

As Colin Ryder, Natural Heritage Trust trustee said, "their first priority
[will be to] arrange for the forest to be legally protected in perpetuity".

"Now this forest is out of the hands of disinterested bureaucrats," says
Cresswell, " and in the hands of private property owners, that long term
protection can be achieved with much more assurance."
