Freemasons Reel Science Film Festival Finalists Selected

Six senior secondary school teams have been selected as finalists in the Freemasons Reel Science Film Festival run by the Royal Society of New Zealand. Each of these teams made a short film based on a science theme or telling a story about science. This could have been a film about science fiction, a medical theme or any subject at all loosely or directly related to science.

The six finalist teams have won an all expenses week long trip to Dunedin in the first week of July to work alongside mentors from the Centre of Science Communication to make another film based upon the topic ‘Eat or be Eaten’. This topic ties in nicely with the International Science Festival theme ‘Food for thought’ also being held in Dunedin at the same.

Students will make a 4-5 minute film and the winning team will be announced on Friday 9 July at a function where the films will be previewed. Each member of the winning team will take away $6,500 dollars in prizes which includes an Apple MacBook Pro Laptop with ‘final cut studio’ editing software.

George Xian, Jim Huang, Phillip Allan, Burnside High School, Christchurch

Henry Bennett, Julin Le-Ngoc, Richard Martin, Papanui High School, Christchurch
