The Russian region devastated by the Beslan school terrorist atrocity is receiving a cash boost.

More than 330 adults and children died in last September's attack carried out by militants demanding independence for the Russian republic of Chechnya.

Now the UK Government has pledged £1 million to help support the region's youngsters.

The aims of the North Caucasus Initiative are to improve the education and well-being among Beslan's children.

There will also be money to promote after-school activities such as sport and drama.

Speaking from the British Embassy in Moscow, Minister Bill Rammell said:

"The world watched in horror at the appalling events at School No.1 in Beslan. That horror and disbelief were shared throughout Britain.

"This will have a tangible, long-term impact on the lives of young people in Beslan and other regions."
