Heavy rain brings more floods to Britain

Gordon Brown has promised a co-ordinated effort as more floods cause havoc in parts of Britain.

Speaking to the BBC, the Prime Minister said that there were "lessons to be learnt for the future" from the ongoing response to the latest floods to hit towns in England. Around 2,000 people were reported to be in emergency accommodation in Gloucestershire, while Evesham council in Worcestershire has called for the armed forces to provide assistance.
Mr Brown said:

"These are extreme conditions...the response of the emergency services has been superb, and the response of the armed forces who have joined them has been excellent.

We must make sure everybody is safe and we must make sure our rescue efforts are co-ordinated."

Some parts of the country received two months' rainfall in just 24 hours from Friday to Saturday, with more rain forecast through the weekend. Parts of South Yorkshire were similarly affected by flas floods at the end of June.
