Millennium Project For Freyberg Place

Sit, relax and enjoy – that is what Hobson Community Board hopes inner city residents and workers will do following this week’s unveiling of its Millennium project for Freyberg Place.

The words are on a plaque marking the project, which involved planting a melia tree in the square and building modern public seating around it.

Board chairperson Judith Dickens says the tree and seating cap off a general revamp of Freyberg Place carried out over the past three years.

“It’s all added up to an attractive, usable open space in the heart of the city. It’s somewhere people who live or work in this area can sit and relax, converse and catch up,” she says.

“We want to make the open spaces in Auckland’s city centre more pleasant and accessible, so the Board is pleased to see its Millennium grant put to such good use.

“I hope people enjoy the improvements to the square, especially the shade from the melia tree, which is something people have often asked for.”

Community boards throughout Auckland chose a range of projects to commemorate the new Millennium, dividing between them a $100,000 Auckland City Council grant.
