Waterfront Design Concepts On Display

Mayor of Auckland City, Chris Fletcher today opened the public display of entries in the first stage of the Waitemata Waterfront design competition in the Old CPO, Queen Elizabeth Square. The entries will provide ideas and concepts that will shape the future design and development of the Waitemata Waterfront area.

Mrs Fletcher says the 153 entries show great vision providing a vast number of ideas to be considered. “The design competition has fired the imagination and creativity of Aucklanders, along with attracting quality entries from around New Zealand and overseas.”

The judging panel set up by Council comprises representatives who have been selected by the organsiations they represent. It will review all of the entries and announce the prizewinners at the end of next month.

Members of the judging panel are; Professor John Hunt (convenor), Mayor Chris Fletcher, Deputy Mayor Dr Bruce Hucker, Councillors Doug Astley, Ngarimu Blair – Ngati Whatua, Ian Athfield and Clinton Bird – NZ Institute of Architects, Paul Asquith – Bus and Coach Association.

Mrs Fletcher said, “The judging panel will undertake a comprehensive process of assessing entries. In essence it is a search process to extract the best ideas and vision for the future of our waterfront area and transport centre.”

The exhibition of entries also gives the public an opportunity to offer feedback on the ideas and designs over the next two weeks.

“We are asking for Aucklanders’ views on what ideas they like and why. Public feedback and further stakeholder consultation will assist the judging panel in selecting the visionary concepts for the second stage of the process.”
