Tenders Called for Abandoned Vehicles
The two thousand abandoned vehicles which have been stockpiling on Great Barrier Island over the last 20 years will shortly be removed.
Auckland City is calling for tenders for the removal and recycling of the derelict vehicles currently stored at the Claris Landfill.
The operation has been planned to avoid such potential environmental hazards as contamination of the ground by fuel and oil. The aim is to improve the current environmental situation, including visual eyesores and vermin, and to reduce current hazards.
The successful tenderer will set up an operations base at the Claris Landfill. The vehicles will be crushed into cubes and trucked across the island to Whangaparapara, from where they will be barged to Auckland. Once back on the mainland, the vehicles will be sent to a recycling facility.
Auckland City is applying for resource consent for the operation. Draft consent conditions include; that liquids drained from the vehicles are stored separately and removed from the site at the end of the crushing operation. In addition, work will be confined to between 8am and 5pm Mondays to Saturdays.
Tenders for the operation close on June 27.
