A brand-new VW Beetle, valued at $38,000, is being given away as competition in Auckland's carparking market continues to heat up.

Customers who park at Viaduct Carpark in downtown Auckland 12 times over the next four months will go into a draw to win the car.

The competition runs from August 1 to November 30, and the winner will even get to choose the colour of the car, according to the carpark's developer, Phoenix Properties director Mr Terry Mikkelsen.

"Genuine competition is long overdue in the New Zealand carparking industry," he said. "New Zealanders deserve a lot more, and we believe that starts with giving customers the services they really want."

Viaduct Carpark and its operator, Secure Parking, have already established a reputation for innovation and customer service.

Located alongside the Tepid Baths, the carpark features fewer pillars and higher stud heights to accommodate four-wheel drive vehicles. It also offers an on-site carwash, a drycleaning service and valet parking options.

There are also baby-changing facilities for parents and guardians, toilets, dedicated disabled parks and disabled access, a $200,000 security system, greenery on each floor and landscaping at the entrance.

Each of the seven levels is identified by a number, by a colour and by the name of a Hauraki Gulf island, and there is a covered walkway link to Fanshawe St.

Viaduct Carpark is open 24 hours, seven days a week and offers a range of payment options. It is believed to be the first carpark in New Zealand to accept American Express cards.

It was recognised at the International Parking Institute's annual awards in Florida earlier this year, taking second place in the worldwide contest.

Secure Parking was founded in Australia in 1979 and now has operations in Australia, Indonesia, The Phillipines, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Lebanon and Dubai.

The company has had a presence in New Zealand for 18 months, although Viaduct Carpark was its first "full-service" location here.

Secure Parking's New Zealand general manager, Mr Allan Rushworth, said the company's formula has been researched and fine-tuned in highly competitive overseas markets - in Sydney alone, there are 12 carparking companies and Secure holds the number one position.
