Shag Rock Gets Rest Area

A rest area has been created at Shag Rock-Rapanui, Sumner, where an old boat shed used to stand.

The boat shed fell into disrepair after use for nearly 60 years. It was the shelter for the Sumner lifeboat from 1941 to 1952 and later used by sea cadets.

Since the cadets left it, the shed was used by "the occasional moulting penguin," according to Rodney Chambers, supervisor of the Christchurch City Council's Coast Care.

The Council's Parks Unit removed the building several months ago and the Coastal Parks' rangers have redeveloped the area with rock landscaping, coastal native plantings and seats.

Mr. Chambers says the views to the mountains and out to sea are as spectacular as ever. He says the rest area can be used also for fishing and the old boat ramp has been retained for kayakers.
