Award Winning Civic Restoration

The restoration of Auckland City’s Civic Theatre has received two major awards from the New Zealand Institute of Architects.

The awards were received by Jasmax Architects and Interior Designers, City Design, Smythe Grant and Salmond Architects, who were appointed by Auckland City to carry out much of multi-million dollar restoration.

The team received a first for ‘colour’, with the judges commenting that the use of new paint and finish technology both retained the charm of the original architecture, and enhanced the many functions of the complex.

Auckland City Councillor, Kay McKelvie, said that the second award, in the heritage category, recognised that the major restoration was highly successful and featured well-researched details and sympathetic finishes.

"Jasmax the lead architects, and the three other architectural firms involved with the restoration of the Civic are to be congratulated on a world class result.

“This has been a painstaking and exhaustive 4 year architectural project, and the team involved can be justifiably proud of the result. Aucklanders now have a modern, international standard entertainment facility developed in a heritage building.

Councillor McKelvie said that while it is tremendous that the Institute have recognised the quality of the restoration, it also needs to be said that there has been a great response from Aucklanders and from visitors to the City who have been very enthusiastic about what has been achieved.

"The venue was in use from November 1999, followed directly by a period of successful private and public events, open days, performances, cinema shows and a formal opening in August 2000 which have all resulted in a positive public reaction to the works undertaken by Auckland City Council," said Councillor McKelvie.
