Pooled Resources Lands Parnell Baths In The Swim

NEWS RELEASE
27 February 2001

POOLED RESOURCES LANDS PARNELL BATHS
IN THE SWIM

Stunning new plans for the redevelopment of the Parnell Baths were endorsed on Friday (23 February) by Auckland City Council’s Parks and Recreation Committee.

The project, which is expected to cost $3,665,000 in total, will address a number of large problems currently facing the baths.

Included in the redevelopment plans are: improvements to the water reticulation and treatment to address issues of chlorinated water and leakages to Judges Bay; undertaking significant deferred renewals and maintenance of the facility with improvements to the main building, changing rooms and café facilities; upgrading of the pool facilities to include the building of a walkway to create two separate pools with one heated, two spa pools, sauna and steam rooms and a heated toddlers pool. Also included in the redevelopment plans are general landscaping, shading and paving. There may also be possible improvements to the angle parking facilities on Judges Bay Road.

“This is really good news for the Parnell community. This pool has a magnificent history dating back to 1913 when it was built, to the 1950s when it was last redeveloped with the lido pool that has remained largely unchanged,” said committee chairperson Councillor Bill Christian.

“We are not only looking at long-term health and safety and maintenance issues here, but also to increasing the patronage to the pools by 20,000 to 30,000 a year.”

Significant feedback was received following the public display of the plans and a number of suggestions are being taken into account by the project team.

“The redevelopment is going to be fantastic,” says Councillor Christian. “At the same time as we improve the facilities, we aim to decrease the annual maintenance requirements for pools, so it is a winning solution all round”.
