‘Dogs Legs’ Renamed To Avoid Confusion

28 February 2001

Parts of Jeffs Road and Browns Lane in East Tamaki will be renamed from 1st of March after residents complained they were confusing for motorists.

The two roads currently form what Manukau City Council calls ‘dogs legs’ - forming part of the main thoroughfare, as well as being branch roads. Following the renaming, Jeffs Rd and Browns Lane will both become solely extensions from the main thoroughfare of Murphys Road and Gracechurch Drive.

The road name change was initiated by concerned residents who were becoming increasingly frustrated at having to redirect lost motorists.

Council officers investigated several options and a survey was conducted with 107 homes in the area. Over half of the residents responded to the survey, 68% in favour of the option that has been adopted. 18 properties will be directly affected and will receive a new house number as well as new road name.

The statutory process to rename the roads began in November 2000. Residents were informed well in advance in order to allow sufficient time to notify relevant parties who may post mail to those addresses.

Daniel Newcombe, Policy Analyst, says there will be a transitional phase during which NZ Post will continue to deliver mail using the old addresses. Council will also contact all relevant utility operators e.g. Telecom and power companies and the Electoral Office.

“We do, however, recommend that residents and property owners begin to use the new addresses as soon as possible,” says Mr Newcombe.
