New lanes when Shelly Beach works complete

The first stage of the North Shore buslane will be operational when the work on the Shelly Beach Road off ramp is completed in April 2001.

Lane 1 southbound on the Auckland Harbour Bridge (which is currently a dedicated exit to Shelly Beach Road) will become a bus priority lane beyond the off ramp to Shelly Beach Road.

This lane extension will operate as a bus priority lane during morning peak periods (6.30am – 9.30am), meaning that all other vehicles travelling on Lane 1 will have to exit the motorway at Shelly Beach Road.

From 9.30am the lane will be available to all southbound traffic, which will then have to merge into the existing southbound lanes at St Mary’s Bay.

Transit New Zealand Regional Manager, Wayne McDonald, says that Transit and the Police will be monitoring the off ramp region to ensure drivers understand where to go.

Notification of whether the lane is for buses only or open to all vehicles will be indicated by new Changeable Merge Signs, positioned above the lanes.

“Traffic management is part of Transit’s overall solution to congestion around the Auckland Harbour Bridge,” Mr McDonald says.
