Paint Out Day In Howick And Pakuranga

26 March 2001

Sick of graffiti in your neighbourhood? Feel like doing something about it? How about joining in with Keep Manukau Beautiful’s Graffiti Watch “Paint out day”?

Howick and Pakuranga residents are invited to participate in the Paint Out Graffiti day on Saturday 31 March. Beginning at 9.30am at the Pakuranga Youth Recreation Centre, volunteers will spend two hours identifying areas for their attention, and then just go and DO IT! A BBQ will be provided at the completion of the event.

Mayor Sir Barry Curtis, says “While Manukau City Council manages contracts for the removal of graffiti from Council owned property and supports the Keep Manukau Beautiful programme, research indicates that to solve the graffiti problem, it needs to be removed quickly from all surfaces and that the use of volunteers is important. Education is also a major key to graffiti prevention.

“Council is currently developing a graffiti management strategy. The strategy aims to impact positively on the image of our city – promoting civic pride and responsibility, increase investment values for property owners and encourage residents to become more involved in communal activities” he stated.

“Initiatives like the paint out day should be supported by the local community. We all have a responsibility to contribute to our community and make a stand for zero tolerance of graffiti.”

Volunteers are asked to please bring along a paintbrush. Anyone wishing to find out more about the paint out day should contact Council’s Howick Community Advisor, Paul Peteru on 262 8900, ext 7033.
