ACC to spend $66.9 million on stormwater

NEWS RELEASE

11 June 2001

Auckland City Council to spend $66.9 million on stormwater improvements

Auckland City has allocated $66.9 million in improvements to the city’s stormwater system over the coming three years.

Councillor Doug Astley, chairperson of the City Works Committee, said he was very pleased to report new spending.

“Auckland City is getting on with the huge job of solving the city’s stormwater problems,” Councillor Astley said.

“This increase in expenditure is very significant and will help the city overcome some of these problems and manage the system well into the future.”

In addition, $1.956 million in grants has been allocated from Infrastructure Auckland for next financial year.

Major works in recent years have concentrated on improving the capacity and quality of stormwater reticulation in the downtown CBD, Orakei Basin and prioritising some other flood-prone areas, such as Avondale and Ellerslie.

“The worst problems are with combined wastewater and stormwater pipes, the usual method of construction before the 1940s,” Councillor Astley said.

The Council estimates that there are currently almost $150 million of deferred renewals for the stormwater system.
