BP Rewards Enterprising Young West Coasters

Deputy Prime Minister Jim Anderton today (Monday, 16 July) presented six Buller High School students with the BP National Community Enterprise Award.

The award recognises the students’ efforts in creating a seated area at a public park at a local beach.

Buller High School was among 16 school projects to receive $1,000 from BP last year to fund a community project.

The BP Community Enterprise Award is part of the Enterprise Studies Programme which runs in over 40% of New Zealand’s secondary schools.

To be eligible for the award, Year 10 (Form Four) students contacted a non-profit organisation and submitted a project for up to $1,000. It had to be enterprising and show a community benefit.

The projects were judged by a panel, including Alan Bollard from Treasury and educationalist Jill Tait.

BP Managing Director Peter Griffiths said students who work on the project learn that good business is more than simply making a profit.

“Businesses will only thrive if the communities they work in are healthy, successful and self-sustaining,” he said.

BP flew the winning students Katy Campbell, Elisha Annan, Alyssa Duncan, Hope Garing and Hayden Leach and Helen Martyn and their teacher Adele Bull to Wellington for the award presentation.
