World Class Operators Aim To Run Auckland’s Trains

Another Milestone Met - World Class Operators Aim To Run Auckland’s Trains

Wednesday September 4, 2002

Four world class rail operators have signalled their interest in running Auckland’s trains.

The Auckland Regional Council (ARC) today announced that as part of its open, competitive tender process, Connex, Stagecoach, Transdev and Serco have submitted responses to ARC’s request for qualifications to run Auckland's trains. These will now be evaluated and a short-list of up to three invited to formally tender.

The ARC will select the successful operator by early 2003 to take over the operation of the Auckland train service from Tranz Rail later that year.

Passenger Transport Committee Chairwoman, Catherine Harland said the calibre of the operating companies was impressive.

“They all have excellent records of running urban passenger rail systems in large international cities and this will help ensure that Aucklanders get the best rail experience.”

“This is yet another milestone that the ARC has achieved as its part in delivering the Rail Project for Aucklanders," said Cr Harland. "The ARC is absolutely committed to actioning the vision of modern trains running to modern stations every 10 minutes at peak times by 2006."

"The ARC is delivering every part of the project that we are responsible for, on time and on budget. Residents and ratepayers across the region can be assured trains and services will be provided at long last."

The initial operating contract will be for around five years during which time Aucklanders will see the transformation of the rail system which includes a substantial upgrade of the tracks and stations, improved services and a modern train fleet.
