Coromandel And Whitianga Planned Outages

Coromandel And Whitianga Planned Outages – Sunday 17 November

The electricity shutdown planned for this Sunday morning, 17 November, in the Coromandel and Whitianga townships and surrounding areas will go ahead as scheduled. The shutdown will affect around 7000 consumers between 9:00am and 3:00pm. Other areas of the Coromandel region (including Whangamata, Pauanui and Tairua) will not be affected.

The shutdown is required to carry out important maintenance and to ensure the integrity of the supply over the peak summer period. Over 60 staff will be involved in the work. Powerco regrets any inconvenience caused to affected consumers during these hours.

The network configuration in the region means that maintenance outages are unavoidable from time-to-time, and this in the first planned maintenance outage in over four years.

Powerco Limited took over ownership of the electricity network in this region on 1 November from UnitedNetworks Ltd, and this shutdown has been planned for over 3 months. In scheduling the outage UnitedNetworks undertook consultation with regional business associations and large customers to minimise the economic impact of the outage and any affect on community activities. Affected consumers should also have been notified by their electricity retailers. Every effort has been made to minimise the impact of this outage.

Powerco reviewed the logistics and risk of rescheduling the work, however no suitable alternative days could be secured prior to the critical summer period. As the new owners of the network in this region, Powerco will make every effort to minimise the effect of any future planned electricity outages on consumers.
