City invited to Aranui Family Festival

The entertainers are booked, the food is on its way and all that is required is people to make the Aranui Family Festival, Affirm a day to remember.

Aranui community co-ordinator Rachael Fonotia says the event on Saturday 7 December has been well supported by the local community and others, who want to help showcase all that is good about Aranui.

Top class entertainers including a number of local faces, food from Aranui’s many cultures and free fun for children are just some of the attractions.

The day will also bring a wide range of organisations to the area to provide information on careers, education and health related services. “We have bookings from everyone from the Cancer Society and Tenants Protection to the Royal NZ Air Force and Sagato Iakopo Youth Group,” Rachael says.

A large number of health organisations will be represented, offering information on healthy living and lifestyle choices as well as plenty of giveaways. There will also be several stalls dedicated to Aranui based services for youth and families.

Among the celebrities at the Festival will be sports stars such as Crusaders flanker Johnny Leo’o and former Melbourne Storm League player Tawera Nikau, who will join local talent in a celebrity touch match. Entertainers will include the likes of King Kapisi (aka Bill Urale); A-Flex (Aranui High School Band); the band F.U.S.A; local performers and cultural groups.

Free entry to children’s activities will guarantee a good day for younger family members. Pony rides, juggling workshops and a giant slide will be among the attractions.

Motivation for Affirm came from the Aranui community as part of Aranui Community Renewal – a partnership between the local community, Christchurch City Council and Housing NZ. Community sponsors, the Council and Housing NZ have also helped to fund the Festival.

Affirm will start at 11am and finish just after 4pm in Wainoni Park, off Hampshire St. If wet, it will be relocated to Cowles Stadium, Pages Rd.
