Eastern Corridor project director announced

Grant Kirby has been appointed director of the joint Manukau and Auckland City Council and Transit New Zealand project to plan new transport facilities between the Auckland central business district and Manukau.

During his two-year appointment he will lead Auckland’s eastern corridor project through the detailed investigations and regulatory planning processes required to protect the route and obtain resource consents.

The processes will include the development and refinement of options for the corridor’s development, extensive community consultation and the formal planning required by the Resource Management Act.

Auckland City Council’s director of planning services Dr Jill McPherson says Mr Kirby will bring extensive project knowledge and experience to the project.

“His focus will be on working with the project partners and the community to take the project through the planning processes and to give certainty about the future of this transport corridor.”

Grant Kirby, who is a land surveyor, was a Director of Auckland City until 1993. He has since worked as a management consultant specialising in local government issues.

He has directed a number of large projects, including Auckland City Council’s Britomart project and part of the redevelopment of the Viaduct Basin. He was appointed commissioner of the Rodney District Council during 2000/2001.

He has just completed his term as government-appointed Auckland transport advocate, reporting to the Minister and Associate minister of Transport.
