Summer Trial Starts Monday For Recycling In Public Places

Takapuna's busy boat ramp and surrounding beachside areas at The Promenade have been chosen as the site for North Shore City's first foray into recycling in public places.

From Monday December 16, eight bins will be clearly marked for 'recyclables only' in the following locations at the end of The Promenade: the boat ramp and parking area; outside the Takapuna Beach Holiday Park Dairy; and the small shelled seating area overlooking the beach. The trial runs until late February.

This pilot Public Place Recycling Programme - part of the council's Waste Minimisation Plan and launched in conjunction with the Takapuna Community Board - is the first step in what could become a city-wide initiative.

Takapuna Community Board chairperson, Tony Lewis, says The Promenade/boat ramp area was chosen because of its high summertime popularity. He hopes residents and visitors embrace the concept of recycling in public places.

"Residents here have been kerbside recycling for more than 10 years and now - for us to make further inroads into waste minimisation - it's time to start recycling at the beaches and reserves we are so proud of," says Mr Lewis.

North Shore City's Waste Minimisation team leader, Michelle Kaczor, says public place recycling has been used successfully as a waste reduction technique in other parts of New Zealand and internationally.

The new yellow recycling bins (international colour for recycling) are for all cans, plastic and glass bottles.
