Protection of Onetangi Beach - Waiheke

The protection from potential erosion of the pristine Onetangi Beach at Waiheke is a high priority in Auckland City Council’s coastline preservation strategy.

A public meeting is scheduled on Sunday 9 February at the Onetangi Community Centre between 10.00am and noon to discuss protection options for the stretch of 1.6km beach that holidaymakers flock to all year round.

Situated on the southern shore of Onetangi Bay, the beach is prone to erosion in the next 50 years, according to a report from engineering consultants Tonkein and Taylor.

The report states that the beach has the potential to be affected by storm-induced erosion, erosion from climatic fluctuations, compounded long term erosion trends and impacts from sea level rise.

Auckland City Council professional services manager Neill Forgie says that the beach will fluctuate according to weather conditions and long term solutions must be found to protect the foreshore.

Hence, the organisation of the public meeting and Council’s desire to receive feedback from the public regarding protection options presented.
