Next Stage Of Fendalton Road Upgrade Under Way

Work begins this week on upgrading the section of Fendalton Road between Clyde Road and Glandovey Road. This part of the project will take around three months to complete.

The road works involve excavating the old road, and reconstructing it, followed by the laying of a new asphalt surface. A central median island and the installation of new street lighting poles will also be carried out during this phase of the work. The south side of the road is being reconstructed first and traffic travelling along this section of road is being diverted to the north side.

Once the upgrade of the south side is complete, the excavation and upgrade of the north side will begin.

Christchurch City Council project manager Kevin Burgess says that road users will notice some disruption over the next few months along this section. “In particular, motorists going west who are used to turning right from Fendalton Road into Glandovey Road and those turning right from Glandovey into Fendalton may experience a longer wait than usual and may wish to use an alternative route.” He says once the work is completed the Fendalton/Glandovey intersection will be controlled by traffic signals.

The upgrade of Fendalton Road started in September last year and is being constructed in stages. The road works involve changing Fendalton Road between the railway and Clyde Road from two lanes to four. An upgrade of street lighting and underground services is also being done along this length of the road.

The new road will include a landscaped median, cycle lanes, and visitor parking among the existing trees where possible. The project also includes providing off-street parking to serve the needs of visitors to St Barnabas Church. The entire job will take up to 14 months and is scheduled for completion at the end of November this year. Locally based contractor Works Infrastructure is doing the work.
