North Shore Libraries launch improved website

Faster, easier electronic access to North Shore City libraries is now available.

The website www.shorelibraries.govt.nz, features quick access to all the new books, CDs, videos and magazines that the library buys, says the council's library services manager, Geoff Chamberlain.

"The upgraded website will be even easier to navigate and to find what's needed," Mr Chamberlain says. "There are now more computers in North Shore City homes than for almost any other area in the country - and we know that our website provides an important point of access to the library system."

An example of the user-friendly changes is the large print theme that can be applied by clicking Need Larger Print? The website displays correctly on smaller screens, and works with most web browsers. And it's easy to click New Releases to see the complete list of current new items.

Library members can log in with membership card number and PIN to set up 'preferences' to display the new material in their areas of interest. Members can also check their list of current loans, may renew items they wish to keep for longer, and request books to be held for them.

All work on the new site was done by North Shore City Council staff - page concept, initial prototypes and backend developed by Mike Copley, a University of Auckland Computer Science student and weekend library assistant at Takapuna Library.

Mike has several years' experience with internet-based technologies and enjoys the challenges it offers. Page layout and design is by Trine Romlund, new media designer with the Information Management team, with project direction by Sarah Cox, Information Technology librarian.
