Tribute to Firefighters book launch

Tribute to Firefighters book launch and NZ Fire Service Open Days

Events celebrating the fire service in Christchurch and the release of a new book about the Firefighters sculpture are coming up in the first weekend in May.

The newly released book, “Journey – the Story of the Steel”, is written by local author Rosa Shiels and follows the gifting of steel from the World Trade Centre by the City of New York to Christchurch, and its transformation into a Tribute to Firefighters by sculptor Graham Bennett. The artwork was commissioned by the Christchurch City Council and sponsors to be sited in its new Firefighters Reserve at the corner of Kilmore and Madras streets.

On Friday 2 May from 4 – 6 pm, at the Central Fire Station in Kilmore Street, Mayor Garry Moore will officially launch the book and acknowledge the firefighters who played a significant role in fighting bush fires in Australia earlier this year.

This will be followed by open days at the Station and the Reserve on Saturday 3 May and Sunday 4 May from 11am – 4pm, celebrating the fire service. Members of the public are welcome to join in the fun at the open days, where there will be demonstrations of a wide range of emergency equipment and activities for all ages.

Copies of the book will be available at the Central Fire Station and Civic Offices.
