Celebrate New Zealand Music Month

Celebrate New Zealand Music Month with Te Huaki Puanaki in Cathedral Square

Firday May 9 2003, 12.15 to 1.15pm, Cathedral Square. FREE

In 2002, six New Zealand albums made it to the number one spot on the Top 50 album charts and as a percentage of the total music sales market, New Zealand music made up 9% of total sales in 2002, compared with just 6% in 2001. In 1995, the amount of New Zealand music played on New Zealand commercial radio was 2%. By the end of 2002 that figure had reached 15%. 15% of all music played across all formats of commercial radio in New Zealand is homegrown. Without a doubt, New Zealand Music Month is something to celebrate, and this Friday's Lunchtime Concert features an accomplished local musician. Te Huaki Puanaki has been playing his brand of Hip Hop, reggae, jazz and pacific sounds for about 5 years, and he will perform this Friday lunchtime in Cathedral Square as part of Christchurch City Council Leisure 's FREE Friday Lunchtime Concert series.

He describes his music as 'catering to young and old', and he likes to play a wide range of styles, from 60's favourites, and modern interpretations, through to songs in Maori.

Huaki grew up in a supportive environment, with parents keenly interested in all things musical. He plays original compositions as well as covers, and has performed at many community events, and even as far away as Singapore. He has also produced a 14 track CD.

Join Te Huaki Puanaki this Friday lunchtime in Cathedral Square.
