Auckland City delighted to receive gift carving

Auckland City Council is keen to provide a home for New Zealand’s largest Maori carving.

Council has offered a number of places in the CBD downtown waterfront area as suitable sites for the four-storey pou kapua (cloud pillar).

“Council is more than happy to receive this magnificent gift to the city – delighted in fact,” says John Duthie, group manager city planning.

Once local iwi and the master carver have worked through a number of cultural issues a particular site will then be chosen. “When a mandate has been granted from the local Ngati Whatua, we will be happy to progress with making a final decision on the carving’s new home,” says Mr Duthie.
