NEWS RELEASE

from Hutt City Council

6 June 2003

HUTT CITY AND UPPER HUTT AGREE TO DISCUSS SILVERSTREAM

At a meeting on Tuesday night the Mayors of Hutt City and Upper Hutt agreed to further negotiations on issues surrounding the Silverstream landfill.

"The burning issue for Upper Hutt City Council is the $230,000 it receives as a share of the revenue from the landfill," said Hutt City's Mayor Terris.

"My Council is mindful, on the other hand, of the looming capital cost of Stage 2 of the Silverstream landfill development, and the need to get some clarity on the Dand the need to get some clarity on the deed governing the landfilleed governing the landfill."

"I have agreed to take a proposal to the Strategic & Annual Plan Working Group meeting to be held on 18/19 June (where Council's draft Community Plan and work programme will be finalised), which would have the effect of removing the proposal to cease payment of a share of revenue to Upper Hutt from 1 July 2004."

"Between now and then (1 July 2004) we would hope to make some progress in clarifying the Deed."

"We are keen to see negotiations between the two councils carried out in good faith and without the need to trade blows in the media," said Mayor Terris.
