Mobile library service to remain

Auckland City’s mobile library will remain in service, says Councillor Graeme Mulholland, chairperson of the Community Services Committee.

Councillors hearing submissions on the council’s draft 2003/2004 annual plan were unanimous in their decision to retain the service, and called for a report detailing how the mobile library service could be better used. During the annual plan process, 139 submissions wanted the mobile library retained.

Councillor Mulholland says it is disappointing that the current service visits only 18 resthomes and 31 pensioner villages, as well as making two street stops every one or two weeks.

“I hope the report will identify ways this valuable resource can better meet the needs of a wider cross section of the community. At present the service is used mainly by Auckland’s elderly residents. There may be other residents, who for various reasons, are unable to visit their local community library and could make good use of such a service,” he says.

Councillors will confirm their decision to retain the mobile library service at the Combined Committee on 25 June 2003.
