Current Targeted Winter Aerial Operation Completed At 11.15am Today

The latest targeted winter aerial operation to wipe out the painted apple moth was completed at approximately 11.15 am. The operation that got underway soon after 7.00 this morning was delayed yesterday due to unsettled weather.

Today’s operation was part of the winter eradication programme that involves aerial operations every 21-28 days in 5 targeted areas between June and September.

“We are pleased to have completed the entire 900 hectares in less than half a day. The aim is to cause residents as little inconvenience as possible. The window in the squally weather this morning meant we could wrap up the operation within 4 and a half hours” says Robert Isbister, General Manager Painted Apple Moth.

The next targeted winter aerial operation is planned for Tuesday 29 July – weather permitting. In an effort to complete future targeted winter aerial operations as early as possible, a helicopter will be used alongside the air tractor.

Winter trap catch data, that indicates the size of the residual painted apple moth population, continues to be positive. “In June the programme reached a milestone, with a zero trap catch for the first month ever. While this doesn’t mean the battle is won, it certainly tells us we are well down the path to eradication. Our hope is that the winter programme will keep the population in check as we come into warmer, breeding months in spring” says Isbister.”
