Manukau teens into reading

Manukau teens into reading

Over 200 Manukau teenagers have taken up The Odyssey challenge and are reading books from Manukau City Council's libraries in the hope of winning cool prizes.

The Odyssey is a reading incentive programme for teenagers, developed by Manukau Libraries, which aims to promote reading by choice during the school holidays. The more books teens read during The Odyssey, the more points they earn which can then be used to bid for prizes.

In the first week of school holidays Manukau Libraries are holding Odyssey events, with hip hop dancers, trivia quizzes, an open mike night and more.

"The Odyssey is something we're doing specifically for teenagers - these events are just for them," explains Kelly McKean Education & Literacy Co-ordinator.

Odyssey auctions will be held at Papatoetoe, City Centre, Mangere East and Howick libraries in the second week of holidays. At the auctions teenagers can use the points they have earned to bid for prizes.

Prizes up for grabs include Village Cinema movie passes, Clean & Clear skincare packs, CD players and walkmans.

Sponsors for The Odyssey 2003 include Sitevision, Village Cinemas, Baker & Taylor International, Clean & Clear and WH Print.

More information can be found on www.theodyssey.co.nz or from any Manukau, Waitakere or Auckland library.
