Library and Service Centre Opening

South Christchurch Library and Service Centre Opening

You are cordially invited to attend the official opening of the new South Christchurch Library and Service Centre on Saturday 23 August.

Christchurch Mayor Garry Moore will open the building at 10am, after which the first book will be issued from the library and everyone will have a chance to explore this exciting new community facility.

The official ceremony will start with a karakia from Dr Terry Ryan, manager of the Whakapapa Unit, Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu. This will be followed by an introduction from Libraries manager Sue Sutherland, an address by Spreydon/Heathcote Community Board chairperson Phil Clearwater and the opening by Mr Moore.

During the ceremony, a jigsaw puzzle will be completed, with each piece representing one of the building’s functions – as a library, service centre, learning centre and café.

These pieces will be placed by Justine Lester (South Christchurch Library), Pat Street and Andrea McDowell (South Learning Centre), Justine Middleton (the café, ‘Red’) and Barbara Ford (Beckenham Service Centre).

Councillors, local MPs, community representatives and those involved in the building project will also be part of the day’s activities, which will include tours of the complex, entertainment and a chance to be among the library’s first customers.

Please note that this is not the official opening of the South Learning Centre, which is also housed in the building. This opening will take place in September.

Two photographs of the building have been sent to you electronically.
