Auckland City to buy Waiheke’s Artworks

Auckland City to buy Waiheke’s Artworks

Auckland City Council voted tonight to buy the Artworks property on Waiheke Island from its owner.

The property will cost $1.25 million plus GST and will make sure Waiheke residents continue to have an excellent community facility.

It is proposed that $200,000 of the price will be funded by the Waiheke Community Board.

Artworks in Oneroa is currently owned by the Waiheke Island Community Artworks Charitable Trust. It includes an Auckland City community library, a visitor information centre, an art gallery, theatre, cinema, café, retail stores, studios, and a two-bedroom house.

Deputy Mayor David Hay says the acquisition will protect Artworks’ current position as well as give Auckland City Council flexibility for the future.

Local Hauraki Gulf Islands councillor Faye Storer says that she is delighted with the outcome.
