Basque Park transformation given the go ahead

Auckland City Council today has accepted Brett Garea Environment’s $1.011 million tender to develop Basque Park into a premium inner city park.
Basque Park is currently an underdeveloped open space in Newton. Its new design, prepared after extensive public consultation, will include an amphitheatre for local community events, water feature, sculptural stone works, quiet seating areas and extensive feature tree plantings including a nikau grove. .
The chairperson of Auckland City’s Recreation and Events Committee, Councillor Scott Milne, says the park development is an extremely positive improvement for the area. Most of the park has never been top soiled, landscaped or planted.

“Our aim is to create a little bit of paradise in the midst of this vibrant and bustling suburb. Once the work is complete, Basque Park will be a beautiful open space that Aucklanders will be able to use for relaxation, exercise and arts performances," Mr Milne says.

Work on the landscaping will begin in November 2003, following the installation of new stormwater and wastewater pipes through the park. Basque Park currently contains a variety of old sewers, some of which are old combined pipes.

Basque Park is located in Newton with entrances off Exmouth, Macaulay, Diamond, Couldry, Rendall and Fleet Streets.
