Wellesley Street East Improvements

MEDIA ADVISORY/TRAFFIC BULLETIN

Auckland Regional Office

Wellesley Street East Improvements
Changes to Traffic Movements

Auckland City Council and Transit New Zealand advise all road users that road works are continuing on Wellesley Street East between Queen Street and Symonds Street. The work includes changes to traffic islands, footpaths, kerbs and lane markings. Work started at the end of last month and is due to be completed by the end of October, weather permitting.

The layout of the traffic islands between Princes Street and Mayoral Drive has been altered. The right turn from Princes Street into Wellesley Street is no longer available.

The following traffic movements will not be available from Wednesday 17 September.

The right turn from Lorne Street down into Wellesley Street

City-bound traffic from Wellesley Street will be provided with a widened left turn into Mayoral Drive to access the city. West-bound traffic on Wellesley Street between Mayoral Drive and Lorne Street will be restricted to one lane only. Kerbs, footpaths and traffic islands will be modified and the existing taxi stands will be removed from this area.

The majority of construction work will take place from 7am to 7pm, Mondays to Saturdays. However Sundays and night work will be required in some circumstances. All work sites will be behind barriers and cones.

Pedestrians are advised to take particular care in this area, and are reminded to cross at signals or to follow any detours put in place.

When completed, the improvements will help to reduce the volume of through traffic which traverses the area of the city with the highest pedestrian traffic. The work is also required to allow Wellesley Street East to connect to a new bridge, which will allow direct access across Grafton Gully to Grafton Road and the hospital. The new bridge, which will also feature new motorway on and off-ramps, is scheduled to open over the weekend of 4 and 5 October 2003.

Auckland City and Transit thank all road users for their co-operation, and apologise for any inconvenience.

For more information regarding the work, visit the Grafton Gully project information centre at the corner of Stanley Street and Alten Road, or phone 0800 ToFreeflow (0800 863 733)
