Tragedy at Matiatia wharf

Tragedy at Matiatia wharf

Auckland City Council was notified at 11.30am this morning of an accident at the Waiheke Island’s Matiatia wharf.

An employee of Adams Landscaping, subcontractor of Robert Cunningham Construction Ltd, contracted by Auckland City, was working on the road at the north side of the new terminal building when the accident happened.

He was airlifted from the site and taken to Auckland City Hospital where he died shortly after his admission.

Joseph Flanagan, Auckland City Council’s Manager of Traffic and Roading Services, expressed his sympathy to the family. ‘We were notified that one of the employees was injured this morning. We need to investigate the site to try to understand what happened. We will co-operate with any official investigation.’

The area of the accident is part of the construction zone. It is protected by hoardings as required by Health and Safety standards.

Work started at Matiatia wharf in June to provide better facilities and comfort for passengers.
