Auckland looks to other events after missing
out on Global Challenge hosting bid

Auckland City will now look to add to their Viaduct Harbour calendar after missing out on hosting the Global Challenge 2004/5 round-the-world yacht race.

Councillor Scott Milne, Chairperson of the Recreation and Events Committee, says Auckland is disappointed but wishes Wellington well as host port in the six weeks from January to February 2005.

“I’m sure that they’ll be offering a wonderful opportunity to showcase their city and New Zealand. It was the right thing for us to bid for the event and, given the success of the major events we have hosted, we felt it was a pretty impressive bid. However, Aucklanders can rest assured that we're going to keep working hard and there are some great prospects on the horizon. I’m sure the Viaduct will be buzzing over this period with international and local attention.”

The Global Challenge port would have seen $8 million spent in the Auckland region at a cost of $1.33 million to Auckland City.
