Matiatia new terminal: construction back on track

Construction work on Waiheke Island’s Matiatia wharf has started again following the fatal accident on 9 October.

The roof of the new terminal is to be completed by mid November, and pipework from the sewerage tanks at the terminal to the timber water tank and treatment plant at Owhanake will be installed from 28 October.

This work will take a month to complete. It will affect the north side of the road at the terminal and in particular the keyhole area: access for buses and taxis will be maintained at all times taxi parking spaces will be reduced mobility parking will be increased in the main car park.

Passengers are advised to make allowances in travel time to catch their ferry. Parking officers and wharfingers will be available to help and direct any queries.

The next significant phase will take place mid November when the existing walkway canopies on the wharf will be removed and relocated along the footpath down the road.

To accommodate the installation of the building canopies, the site hoardings will be shifted. By the end of November, these canopies will provide improved shelter. Vehicle access will be maintained for couriers collecting freight.

Prior to Christmas, the site hoarding will be removed to provide additional space for passengers and allow them to see how work has progressed. Access to the terminal building will still not be available. The work on the two-tier offloading bridge will commence in January 2004. This will involve building a walkway and ramp down the south side of the wharf.

The new passenger terminal building will provide better facilities and comfort for passengers, including large covered waiting areas, full cover from the road to the ferries, upgraded ticketing amenities and concession opportunities, public toilets, coast guard and first aid rooms, and freight handling facilities.

The official opening of the new terminal is expected to take place in February 2004.
