New plantings for Waltham Rd/Moorhouse Ave corner

New plantings for Waltham Rd/Moorhouse Ave corner

Nine trees that were planted to screen the former Christchurch Gasworks are to be removed from the corner of Waltham Rd and Moorhouse Ave to make way for new trees and landscaping of the area.

"The pine trees and conifers were planted in 1974, prior to the demolition of the Gasworks in the early 1980s, but are now in poor condition and could be blown over in a high wind," the Christchurch City Council’s landscape team leader Dennis Preston said.

Flowering wild cherry trees; Stone Pines and a cluster of Maritime Pines will replace the old trees. Colourful groundcover plants and a new footpath will also be added to the area.

The trees will removed by Council Parks staff in the next couple of weeks and the ground prepared for autumn planting.
