Join the 'Jurassic Joyride' this Summer

Manukau City Council Libraries are inviting children and parents to be involved in the Summer Reading Programme 'Jurassic Joyride - Haere-Hari Hurahiki' from 15 December to 23 January.

The Summer Reading Programme aims to interest, encourage and stimulate children to enjoy reading, while encouraging parents and caregivers to become more involved in their children's reading at home.

Over 950 children successfully completed the programme last year.

"Parents involved in last year's Summer Reading Programme noted benefits for their child such as improved reading skills, better relationships with library staff and increased enthusiasm for reading," says Linda Bown, Co-ordinator Children's and Rural Services.

Children and parents make a commitment to read or be read to for 15 minutes a day during the school holidays. Children and parents also attend 'check in' sessions, where they sit down with a library staff member to discuss the books they liked. Incentives are handed out when children reach their reading targets, and a party is held at the end of the programme. All children who complete the programme successfully receive a certificate and a medal .

Enrolments start Thursday 11 December from 3.30pm at any branch of Manukau Libraries. The programme is free to Manukau Libraries members aged between 4 - 13 years. Parents are encouraged to enrol their children on Thursday as places are limited. Contact your local library or visit www.manukau-libraries.govt.nz for more information.
