Manukau Harbour crossing needs to be integrated

MEDIA ADVISORY

SH20 Manukau Harbour crossing
needs to be integrated for the community

Auckland City’s Transport Committee has called for council officers to work closely with Transit New Zealand (Transit NZ) in agreeing plans for the State Highway 20 (SH20) Manukau crossing and the Onehunga area, ensuring integration of the development into the community and timely completion of a vital link in the city’s transport network.

“It’s becoming increasingly important for council to work with Transit NZ and the community to develop the best solution for the community of Onehunga, as well as the city’s and region’s road network,” says Councillor Greg McKeown, Transport Committee chairperson.

The committee has noted Transit NZ’s inclusion of pedestrian, cycle and recreational facilities in their proposed options, but has expressed a need to consider passenger transport, development and community plans as well.

“We need to ensure timely development of the SH20 south-western corridor, but at the same time take into good account the community’s needs and character. While transport investments will help boost the economy of Onehunga, plans also need to be integrated into the community and improve, where possible, other areas of community development,” says Mr McKeown.

Investigations into a local crossing on or near the old Mangere Bridge are ongoing with the SH20 project facing a review under the new Land Transport Management Act 2003.
